What is skin laser treatment used for?

There are two types of skin laser treatments in dermatology practices.  Both use radiofrequency heating to change the appearance of your skin.  Laser resurfacing can be used to treat wrinkles of the face, skin blemishes, acne scars, and even pre-cancerous skin lesions. It also called a “laser peel” or “laser vaporization”. Laser skin toning is used to tone the skin of the face and body using laser-applied heat treatments.

Is laser treatment good for skin?

Laser resurfacing treatments take off thin layers of damaged skin, leaving healthy skin behind so the appearance of the skin is improved. In that respect, it can be good for areas of sun-damaged skin that might otherwise turn into skin cancer.

What are the side effects of laser treatment?

Laser treatment ideally will improve your skin’s appearance. There are side effects, however.  There can be skin burning from the heat of the laser, which can lead to scarring and changes in skin pigmentation.  If the skin is disrupted unintentionally, you can get a bacterial infection and, if you’ve had cold sores in the past, they can become reactivated by the skin laser resurfacing procedure.

Is laser treatment painful?

The amount of pain you have with laser skin resurfacing varies according to the depth of the treatment and the amount of your face treated.  When small areas of the face are treated superficially, a local anesthetic can be applied before the procedure.  If the resurfacing involves the entire face and if deeper areas of the skin are treated, a general anesthetic may be necessary.  There may be swelling and discomfort for a few days after the procedure but these can be treated with pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Does laser skin tightening really work?

Laser skin tightening is slightly different from laser skin resurfacing.  Radiofrequency heat is used to stimulate the skin to make firming collagen and elastin proteins that tone the skin. While the treatment takes just minutes, you will need to wait until the skin heals to see an effect and it may take more than one treatment.  It relies on the natural healing properties of the tissues to improve the way the skin looks

Does laser cause cancer?

There is no scientific evidence that laser skin resurfacing causes cancer. To the contrary, this procedure can actually be preventive against certain types of skin cancer.  Precancerous skin changes can be removed with the laser resurfacing technique so these cannot later cause cancer.

How does Cutera xeo work?

The Cutera xeo workstation at M. Dika Dermatology delivers results via four main treatments.

Limelight®

Limelight uses light to revitalize the skin, balance skin color, and improve complexion. Dr. Dika can also use this noninvasive treatment to improve vascular conditions, benign pigmented lesions, and sunspots. Limelight delivers results with minimal discomfort. To optimize results, your provider can customize the hand-piece for your skin tone and the age of your skin.

Prowave LX™

The Prowave LX uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology, a type of light therapy that delivers multiple wavelengths to the second layer of your skin without harming the first. Prowave LX improves upon earlier IPL technology and provides superior targeting.

With it, Dr. Dika can quickly and comfortable remove hair from both large and small areas of your body. The Prowave LX works on all kinds of hair, including light and fine hair.

Nd:YAG

The Nd:YAG hand-piece uses an Nd:YAG laser to remove hair and revitalize the skin of all types. With the Nd:YAG feature, Dr. Dika is able to treat a wide range of skin conditions and features, such as pigmentation, wrinkles, birthmarks, moles, and vascular lesions on the face and lower extremities. Most importantly, the long pulsed is the safest modality for hair laser removal on darker skin patients with minimal to no risk of hyperpigmentation (no damage to the top layer of the skin).

Laser Genesis™

The Laser Genesis procedure is designed to revitalize and brighten your skin. By heating your skin, it triggers collagen growth and removes imperfections like wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, large pores, and uneven skin tone.
